-RYAN FARDY & SHADES OF BLUE
House of Blues 7\2\03

Like any other established medium, the blues has its purists, and it
must be awfully intimidating trying to put yourself in the same weight
class as Buddy Guy, B.B. King, or even Jimmie Vaughn. Now imagine you're a teenage white kid. In spite of the somewhat impossible odds against him, Ryan Fardy plays the blues like he knows how to. Not that I'm a studied blues scholar, but I know good blues when I hear it, and I know great guitar playing when I see it. Ryan's got quite a few tricks up is sleeves and in a pinch he can pull off the most convincing Hendrix lick this side of Alvin Lee. And he's not shy either. During one of his solos he jumped right down into the crowd, bringing the music to the people, and the result is an uplifting and exciting live experience. So what if the backup band looked like the distant cousins of Mike Love, the music was together without being uptight, loose without being sloppy, and bluesy without being hackneyed. Definitely worth checking out. (Jesse Thomas, The Noise)

-Ryan Fardy- A Rockin Shade of Blue by Steve Mroz (in Boston Blue News Magazine)

During his live performances, you can witness the complete and utter control Fardy has over the guitar in every aspect, and you can sense how he literally makes it an extension of himself.  As an entertainer and showman, he doesn’t hold anything back, and he knows how to impress a blues club audience.  Fardy often leaves the stage behind and glides through the tables and by the bar, almost riding his wireless guitar and unexpectedly firing off incredibly fast licks as if he were speaking the sounds himself.  He feeds off the audience’s reaction and the surprised looks he gets when they see the tremendous focus and flamboyance of his performance.  Quite often he can be seen playing the guitar just as well behind his back or, to the amazement of his dentist and his father, picking out unbelievable phrases with his teeth.  His performances are also known to include as few nifty slide guitar tricks, such as using the bartender’s metal drink shaker or a patron’s empty beer bottle as a slide.

Many were on hand recently (at Mulligan's) to hear teenaged blues phenomenon Ryan Fardy. He's from Hanover and has built a South Shore reputation by playing at Aerosmith's Mount Blue club in Norwell. Fardy rocked with a Stevie Ray Vaughan-like intensity while adding some originals that suggested he has great promise.
